The Lives of Others
May 27th, 2007
This weekend I saw The Lives of Others, a film about the East German secret police and their job to keep tight surveillance on suspicious characters during the Cold War.
The film reminded me that I was fascinated with the Berlin Wall when I was a child. On November 9, 1989, I wrote a letter to myself. In it I described the Wall falling and the crowds celebrating and whatever else a kid could know from history class and TV news.
I also had a fascination with time capsules. The letter was sealed in a plastic container along with other important items of the day (Barbie?), and buried in a deep hole in my front yard.
Now..if only there was a film that could remind me where I buried it…
