Yahoo! Briefcase is Closing- Action Required, said the email. And so I have about 300 documents and presentations to go through. Most are years old. While the Briefcase has become redundant, I am finding some really cool stuff in my files.

For example, the Meet the World ad campaign designed for defunct Portuguese political magazine Grande Reportagem:

disgraceful

November 3rd, 2008

Over the weekend Glendale, AZ, hosted an Arab American Festival, “a Non-political, Non-religious, Non-profit Organization established to build community pride […] targeted to all Americans to create an awareness of the diverse ethnic groups while having fun.”

The main sponsors? Yes, the CIA, FBI, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence hosted a career fair thinly disguised by falafel stands and live music.

It was their way to reach out the Arab-American community, to say Uncle Sam is sorry for thinking that you all are dirty plotting terrorists; but if you know anyone who is, we’d sure love to have you come work for us!

This advertisement for the National Guard is now playing pre-previews in movie theaters across the country. While searching for the video online, I was surprised to find how many people like the video and its message. Dissenters on message boards are accused of being hippie left-wingers who are unpatriotic and unsupportive of US troops.

Apparently the recruitment resource of high schools in low-income areas has been tapped. The new strategy is to reach middle America. The video doesn’t make any sense, but it sure is fancy. It just may work.

Inside Outside

July 28th, 2008

The 2005 documentary Inside Outside follows eight international street artists (including Swoon, Os Gemeos, and Adams & Itso) to see what makes them tick- and ticks them off.

These days I stay in a NYC neighborhood that I don’t know very well. I am visually assaulted every time I step out my front door. Soho is just about looking like you have money. All the advertisements read fuck you for thinking that you already owned everything you want and need. Fuck the poor.

Wooster Collective was named after Wooster Street. A quick look around, and it’s impossible to tell what was so inspiring. A tag scrawled on several sidewalks and construction barricades reads “Nobody Cares.” But nobody is even here. The streets are empty, and there is nothing to see here.

Bush and friends have urged Americans to use this ±$600 boost to go shopping. The reality is that most of us will be putting the money towards the mortgage, credit card debt, or monthly bus passes until we can afford to put gas in the car again.

But instead of spending frivolously, why not make a statement with your dollar bills?

Idea #1: the anti-immigration lawn. Hire this company to do your yard work: White Guys Landscaping. The name says it all- no Mexicans here!

shock & awe

April 24th, 2008

The following advertisement is part of Amnesty International’s Unsubscribe project. The campaign addresses inhumane interrogation techniques like those used in Guantanamo Bay.

Words can only do so much to describe torture: the stress position, forced nudity, sleep deprivation, and waterboarding. Images show just how these practices violate human rights.

The spots can be found online, and they will also be previewed in UK cinemas starting in May. This makes sense because it is a UK-based project. But considering that American intelligence are the main purveyors of this kind of abuse, shouldn’t these ads run with the highest visibility in the US?

In hipper times I met trip-hop artist Tricky. He asked me where I was from, and my answer made him smile. He told me that he liked Arizona and its “wicked weed”.

Now crystal meth has overtaken marijuana as the drug of choice in the valley. Several versions of this disturbing billboard have been placed in downtown Phoenix to call attention to this growing problem.

poll

What a strange question. It’s not asking if I will be voting for John Edwards, but if I think enough other people will be to win him the election.

This poll, worded differently, could produce interesting results- say, to test what kind of incentives could increase voter turnout. In 2004, 72% were registered and 64% of the voting-age population voted in the presidential election. For the lazy, complacent, or fed up non-voter, money could be the ultimate motivator. The chance to win a prize could drive more people to participate.

The idea certainly appeals to me. A $500 Visa gift card would look lovely on my huge Visa bill.
